PANAJI: Porvorim police have registered a first information report (FIR) against a 56-year-old man for allegedly killing his 85-year-old mother at their rented premises in Porvorim.

According to the police, the accused Kallol Bhaumik, who is said to be mentally unsound, reportedly strangulated to death his mother Jharna, a native of Uttar Pradesh.

Porvorim police inspector Jivba Dalvi said that following the postmortem report and investigation, an offence under Section 302 of the IPC has been registered against Kallol.

According to the police, on April 26, sensing something amiss, Kallol’s  neighbours alerted them. The door of the flat was locked from inside and as such entry was gained with the assistance of the fire brigade personnel. Kallol was present along with his deceased mother. Subsequently, the body was sent for postmortem whereas Kallol was admitted in the IPHB, Bambolim.

The postmortem examination revealed the cause of death to be the compression of neck.

During the course of investigation it was revealed that accused Kallol was mentally unsound and was harassing and assaulting her mother for want of money and was also harassing his neighbours, the police said.

Circumstances, statements on record and autopsy report suggest that Kallol committed the murder by compressing her neck, informed the police.  The police said that Kallol, who is presently lodged at IPHB Bambolim, once declared fit will be arrested in connection with the case.
