The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) will soon place the city municipal market under the surveillance of 200 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, as a part of an Rs 24 lakh project.
City Mayor Surendra Furtado informed this daily that the decision has been taken to maintain cleanliness in the market, as some miscreants were found to be staining the walls of the market as well as dirtying its premises. “The CCP will also put up CCTV cameras at two other locations in the city namely its garbage disposal facility at Patto, and its sorting centre at the St Inez animal shelter,” he added.
Speaking further, Furtado said that the funding for the project would come from the Rs 20 crore provision made by the government in its budget, towards the CCP developmental grants. “The project will be fine-tuned at the meeting of the standing committee of the Corporation,” he noted.
The CCP has already installed CCTV cameras in its premises, which provides footage of various locations in the Corporation building, including the garage and administrative sections.
Meanwhile, the CCP is in the process of developing its computer room headed by the junior engineer (computer) Nikita Kerkar, which will maintain a watch on all the locations under the CCTV surveillance. Kerkar has already developed some software for the Corporation. A server costing Rs 3 lakh would also be put into service in a month’s time, for the purpose.
The City Mayor informed that ex-servicemen from the Rajya Sainik Board would be recruited to maintain a watch on cleanliness at the city municipal market. “Initially we will employ five such ex-servicemen, who will keep guard over spitting in the market, collection of Sopo and waste management,” he mentioned.
Furthermore, Furtado said that depending on the performance of these ex-servicemen, more members of the Rajya Sainik Board would be subsequently recruited. “They will check the trade licenses, house tax payments and board licenses around the city,” he revealed, warning that fines would be collected from the defaulters.
Replying to a question, the City Mayor said that the process of Sopo collection at the city municipal market has begun and the collection has increased twofold, as compared to previous collection.
