Drug trial volunteer dies outside lab at Corlim

PANAJI: A 29-year-old man has reportedly died under mysterious circumstances at a pharma research centre in Corlim. The deceased has been identified as John D’Souza, a resident of Mumbai.

According to the Old Goa police, D’Souza and 17 other volunteers had undergone clinical trial or drug test at the Vergo Pharma Research located in the IDC, Corlim.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, and Prashil Kolhapurkar of the Vergo Pharma Research informed the police.

The Old Goa police after conducting the inquest panchanama shifted the body to the GMC for conducting postmortem.

The police quoting the officials of the Vergo Pharma Research said that D’Souza and the other volunteers had been allowed to go on Wednesday morning after the drug tests but had been asked to report back later in the day for blood examination.

Later when D’Souza came back to undergo the blood test, he allegedly smelled of alcohol following which he was not allowed to enter the premises, the police said quoting  the officials.

As such the deceased sat outside the gate.  Later he was found to be dead, the police said. The police said postmortem will reveal the exact cause of the death.

The family of the deceased has been informed, and the postmortem will be conducted only after the arrival of his family.

The police have registered the case as unnatural death under Section 174 of the CrPC.
