CURCHOREM: Curchorem, Sanguem and Quepem police, in a joint operation, succeeded in nabbing two thieves within 24 hours of complaints on Tuesday. According to Curchorem police investigating officer, PSI Arjun Sangodkar, the two thieves, who were involved in allegedly snatching a gold chain and a mangalsutra at Kakoda and Sanguem, were identified by one woman when the police showed her a CCTV footage.
It is learnt that the culprits were arrested under Sections 356, 379 readwith 34 of IPC. Their names were disclosed as Ashvapak Shaikh (19) and Hussain Shaikh (18) from New Vaddem, Vasco. According to police, the culprits were identified by a woman from Tony Nagar, Sanvordem, whose chain they had unsuccessfully tried to snatch away.
The woman informed the local panch member Deepak Sawant about the incident, who brought her at the police station and there she identified the thieves on a CCTV.
According to Sawant, later when he was travelling to Sanguem for some work he saw the two persons, who were identified by the woman, on a two-wheeler. “I immediately informed the police and asked them to send their team. I also kept a watch on them and after reaching Tanki-Xeldem, the police from Curchorem, Sanguem and Quepem succeeded in nabbing them,” informed Sawant. On Monday evening, Taramati Dessai (75) from Madhegal, Kakoda and Meera Naik Dessai (49) from Lingwada-Kakoda had complained that two robbers snatched their gold chain worth Rs 49,000 and a mangalsutra from their necks.
Also, in another complaint that was registered at Sanguem police station, Alka Narvekar (70) stated that her mangalsutra was snatched by two thieves who came on two-wheeler while she was walking along the road.
Police interrogated and recovered the ornaments from them. Also the two-wheeler that was used without a number plate was seized. The case in Curchorem is being investigated by head constable Dayneshwar Gaonkar under the supervision of PI Ravindra Dessai and at Sanguem PSI Ramchand Naik is investigating under supervision of PI Uttam Raut Dessai.
