DM’s physics students visit NIO

VALPOI: The department of Physics of D M’s College and Research Centre, Assagao recently organised a visit to the National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR-NIO), Dona Paula as a part of students’ enrichment activity.

A day-long programme consisted of presentations by the scientists and visits to various research laboratories.

The visit commenced with a short film detailing information about the institute and its research endeavors. Dr T Suresh, Dr Damodar Shenoy, Dr K Vijay Kumar and Dr Vijay, scientists, in their presentations, provided valuable inputs pertaining to contemporary oceanographic research being carried out in the institute.

Visits were organised to various laboratories, such as, Chemical, Physical, Geological and Marine Instrumental divisions. During the visits to these laboratories, students were given an opportunity to interact with the scientists and research scholars with respect to various aspects of research.

A brief over-view about different sophisticated and advanced research equipment, their applicability and protocol of analyses of samples was also arranged.

A presentation about research and development of various marine instruments being undertaken by the institute and their utility evoked a good response amongst the student community.

Curtain of visit was drawn down with a presentation by Dr Sujata Raikar about foraminifers and protocol to obtain them from sea sediments. Twenty one select students were accompanied by three faculty members of the college.

Scientist, B Vijay Kumar and Sharon Gomes of NIO coordinated the activities during the visit.
