The people in the Mormugao taluka became sore as the nationalised as well as co-operative credit banks failed to exchange old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes, which have been demonetized to curb the circulation of fake currency.
The people panicked after they failed to exchange old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes and even failed to get cash in form of Rs 100 currency notes or still lower denomination.
Long queues were witnessed at all banks. Speaking to this daily, some people expressed anger over the failure on the part of the government to make arrangements to provide new currency notes and also notes of lower denomination.
“We failed to exchange Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes,” said an irritated customer who was waiting for hours outside a nationalised bank, since 9.30 a.m.
“We were given silly replies by the bank staff, which irritated us more,” added another customer.
Meanwhile, price of gold skyrocketed due to demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. The goldsmiths were seen making a brisk business since November 9.
“Gold price has shot up,” said Laxmi Palekar of Sada, who had gone to find out the gold rate at a jewellery shop in the heart of the town.
The people were seen rushing to the jewellery shops to purchase gold with Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes they are having.
Most of the shops, petrol pumps, hotels, cash counters of banks, municipality counter and KTCL shuttle service counter ran short of Rs 100 currency notes, which led to a lot of inconvenience to the people.
The people were seen running from pillar to post to get Rs 100, Rs 50 and other denomination notes.
Meanwhile, Dabolim MLA Mauvin Godinho congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking a path-breaking step to demonetize high denomination currency notes, which will necessarily impact and curb the generation of black money.
Godinho said that it is undoubtedly a surgical strike on terrorism and terror-related activities.
