Hundreds of Muslims, including children and women, on Monday, gathered in front of the South Goa Collectorate building to protest the move of the central government to frame the Uniform Civil Code for the country.
Holding placards in their hands, the members of the Muslim community strongly opposed the ‘interference in the Islamic laws by the central government.’
“Crores of Muslims cannot be punished with this interference in the lslamic law. If there are a few cases pertaining to the concepts and rules of Nikah and Talaq (divorce), there has to be proper actions. But, we strongly condemn the idea of the central government of framing Uniform Civil Code,”said Imam of Mahamadya Masjid, while speaking to media at the Collectorate building.
The protestors, who later submitted a memorandum to the office of the South Goa Collectorate, said that the central government’s decision of framing Uniform Civil Code would hurt their religious sentiments.
“The concepts and rules of the Nikah and Talaq were laid down by Allah in the Holy Quran, hence it is considered and followed worldwide as a divine law which strictly cannot be interfered neither can it be amended. Any interference of any individual, legal body, or any other source is not required. For the some Islamphobic groups, people at large cannot be surpassed,” states the memorandum.
Sunni Sahara Trust members said, “When serious discords develop in a marriage, and the husband wants to get rid of his wife, there are legal compulsions and time consuming judicial process. In extreme cases, a husband may resort to illegal criminal ways of getting rid of her by murdering her. In such situations, triple talaq is a better recourse.”
Ayub Khan, a member of Sunni Sahara Trust said that they appeal to the government to allow them to preach, profess and follow the religion without the political interference.
