The demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes has hit the enforcement drives of the traffic police.
Sources said that due to the shortage of currency notes police personnel have been instructed to go soft on traffic rule violations and concentrate on traffic regulation.
However, traffic police (north) DySP Dharmesh Angle said that blatant violations of traffic rules will not be tolerated.
“Owing to the currency notes issue, on humanitarian grounds, we have decided to go slow on enforcement. But this does not mean that we are ignoring traffic violations,” said Angle adding that “blatant traffic violations will not be tolerated and in such situation the licences of the rider/driver will be confiscated in case there is no cash with the offender to pay the fines. The licence will be returned once the fines are paid.”
“Police personnel have been asked to pay attention on regulation of traffic rather than enforcement. This does not mean that we will sideline the enforcement. Traffic violators will be stopped, questioned,” Angle said.
