PANAJI
Stating that his “frame-up in the rape case” has not shaken his resolve to contest the forthcoming assembly election from the Panaji constituency, St Cruz MLA Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate on Thursday said the field of politics in Goa has reached a “cheap level”, wherein political parties resort to shameful things for gaining and retaining power.
Speaking to ‘The Navhind Times’, Monserrate said that he has been in politics for the past 14 years, and is now shocked to see the mindset of the political parties, which aim at character assassination of their opponents for ulterior motives.
“I know, which political party is behind the entire conspiracy, and would expose it in due time,” he maintained, pointing out that the “higher-ups” of the particular political party are fully aware of the plot woven against him.
The Goa Children’s Court, Panaji, on May 18 granted conditional bail to the St Cruz MLA in the alleged minor girl rape case.
Monserrate said the political party involved in his frame-up should mend its ways before it is too late.
“The people are very much aware of the things happening around them,”he added, pointing out that it is the strength of truth, which has prevented distortion of his image, in spite of the conspiracy to involve him in a heinous crime.
“I am certain that I will come out of this case clean and clear, as I have nothing to hide and carry a clean conscience,” the St Cruz MLA maintained, observing that he has full faith in the judiciary system of the land, besides the support of his voters as well as well-wishers, which would see him sailing through all the troubles.
“If a public representative like me can be trapped in this way, you can very well think where a common man stands in this regime,” he stated, concluding that the entire incident has made him stronger in his political resolves, and he would emerge a still stronger individual after his certain acquittal from the case.
