Robbery: activist, two cops remanded to 10-day custody

Activist Deepak Gadekar, and two police personnel hawaldar Keshav Naik and police constable Mahendra Mandrekar attached to the Calangute police station, who allegedly robbed a businessman from Mangalore of Rs 10.20 lakh and were booked for dacoity and criminal conspiracy, were on Sunday remanded to 10 days custody by the JMFC court, Mapusa.

It may be recalled that RTI activist Gadekar and four others had allegedly robbed the businessman Karthik Kotiam, who wanted to exchange Rs 10.20 lakh in new notes for demonetised notes as he had been assured that he would get extra Rs 6 lakh for the exchange.

Activist Gadekar had allegedly arranged a meeting with the businessman in a hotel at Baga while his other accomplices were waiting in a car. Gadekar allegedly snatched the bag containing notes and fled the site while his other accomplices tried to kidnap the businessman and his friend in the car but the plan failed.

The incident had occurred on December 1 but in the hope of getting the money the case was not registered. Finally, on Saturday Karthik filed a police complaint which named Gadekar.

During investigation, it came to light of Calangute police that two police personnel from the police station were involved in the crime. On Saturday, the Calangute police had arrested Gadekar, Naik and Mandrekar and on Sunday the three were produced before the JMFC court, Mapusa.

According to Calangute police, in all 5 persons were involved in the crime and two are still absconding. Calangute police are on the lookout for other two. PSI Mangesh Volvoikar is the investigating officer.
