Protest in Thivim over bad road

MAPUSA : Around 150 Thivim villagers, aggrieved over the bad state of the main road stretch from the church to old post office, staged a protest on Monday with the support of Congress block and panchayat members. The agitators also raised slogans against the state government and local MLA.

The 800-metre stretch of road is in bad condition for more than 6 months due to which the commuters especially two-wheeler riders face a lot of hardships. Traffic congestion is also witnessed during peak hours as it is one of busiest routes with vehicles plying towards Belgaum, Bicholim, Sattari and other places from Mapusa. Moreover the local residents also face a lot of inconvenience as dust enters into their houses.

The issue has been raised before the gram sabha and panchayat body on several occasions but no repairs work has been done.

Former Tourism Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar alleged that 75 per cent of contracts in Thivim constituency are being given to a supporter of the government due to which substandard work is being done. He also demanded a vigilance inquiry in this regard. Thivim sarpanch Shivdas Kambli said, “The stretch of road towards old post office is in bad state. The panchayat has written many letters to PWD department but nothing has been done.”

Another panch member Tulsidas Shinde said that dust enters houses mainly during peak hours inconveniencing a lot of people.
