My priority is to desilt all drains, nullahs before rains : new Mapusa CO

The new chief officer of Mapusa Municipal Council Clen Madeira has said that despite desilting and cleaning of drains/gutters, people are still dumping plastic and other waste which has become a major concern for the civic body.

Almost after a gap of three years Mapusa Municipal Council has got a full time chief officer. The outgoing chief officer Raju Gawas was holding additional charge of MMC.

Interacting with this daily, the new chief officer said that his priority is to get all drains, nullahs desilted before the onset of the monsoon, especially Mapusa market which is in a low lying area and is prone to flooding.

“In Mapusa there are many issues which needs to be addressed such as cleanliness, garbage management, slaughter house, market etc. I will need some time to study the various issues in the town,” added the new chief officer.

He further elaborated that he has already issued directions to his engineers and supervisors to finish all the pre-monsoon works by end of this week and from Monday he will be inspecting each ward and market to take stock of the work done”.

Commenting on the market drains and nullah, Clen said, “The drains are being desilted by our staff while water resources are directed to desilt the main nullah. There are cross drains in the market which will also be desilted so that flooding can be avoided”.

The roads from Gandhi Chowk to Khorlim Sim, Hutatma Chowk to Mapusa Court, Taxi Stand to Tar Bridge, Mapusa Court to Ganeshpuri, Court to Peddem, Court to Karaswadda, Duler to Cunchelim come under Public Works Department and are yet to be desilted.

When asked about the drains belonging to PWD roads section, Clen said,  “MMC will be writing to them to take up work as early as possible”.

Like every year this year also MMC has identified around 8 – 10 structures in their jurisdiction which are in dilapidated state.

When asked about the dilapidated buildings in Mapusa, he informed that “We have already identified such structures and notice will be sent to the owners”.
