Inducement of booze and drugs for voters

PANAJI: While cash is not being used as incentives to lure voters, liquor and drugs are being offered freely to tempt the electorate in the upcoming assembly elections.  The Election Commission on Friday said that no cash seizure in Goa has been so far since the model code of conduct came into force  on  January 4.

However, total 30,889.9 bulk litres of liquor valued at Rs 40.8 lakh have been seized, while narcotics worth Rs 15.4 lakh have been seized. The narcotics comprise LSD, charas, ganja and MDMA.

Seizures have been made by the police  as well as the state excise department. These disclosures were made by the state office of the election commission.

As per information received, total of 32 cases of violation of model code of conduct have been registered by the state CEO until January 25. This includes defacement of public property by way of banners, posters on walls, misuse of vehicles, violation of the Loud Speaker Act, illegal meetings and inducements to gratification to voters. Interestingly, total of 10 FIRs have been lodged over 32 violations of election  code, which were  registered with the poll panel. NT
