Seven new mini garbage collection trucks that were sanctioned to the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) by the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) seven months ago lie unused at the old market yard. People in some quarters are blaming MMC’s administration section of apathy. Besides the new vehicles, some others like tractors, compactors and rickshaws are also lying unused there.
Sources informed this daily that the vehicles could not be put to use as the MMC lacks enough drivers. However, MMC officials said that the vehicles will be put to use in toto soon. Former MMC chairperson Savio Coutinho said that this amounts to criminal waste of tax payers’ hard-earned money and called upon MMC authorities to put the vehicles to use immediately.
MMC chief officer Y B Tavde could not be contacted. However, an official said that just two of the seven are used for collection of waste adding, “All cannot be used as there are no labourers.”
It may be recalled that the MMC was allotted vehicles as it was eagerly seeking them from the directorate of municipal administration to help in waste collection.
