Goa police department has transferred the alleged murder case of undertrial prisoner Vinayak Karbotkar to the Crime Branch. The case will be investigated by PI Viswesh Karpe.

According to the police, history-sheeter Karbotkar had died during a ruckus reported at the Sada sub jail, Vasco, on January 25. Other prisoners as well as jail staff had also suffered injuries during the incident.

Mormugao police had registered an offence on charges of murder and under various sections of the IPC against unknown accused persons.

The post-mortem report had revealed that Karbotkar died of haemorrhage and shock as a result of combined multiple body injuries caused by a blunt object.

It may be recalled that on January 25 night, Karbotkar was brought back from Oras, Maharashtra as the authorities did not admit him in a jail there. As per the report of the jail administration, immediately he (Karbotkar) started misbehaving with the jail staff and demanded to open the gate of cell number 13.

As his demand was turned down, he instigated cell inmates who forcibly managed to break open the cell gate and came out. Subsequently, they went on a rampage and damaged the government property at the jail, the report said.

According jail staff, it was pitch dark after the rampage and nothing could be seen to control the situation. Further, the inmates opened the gate of cell number 15 by force during which it appears that there was a tussle between the prisoners and in between they assaulted the jail staff, states the report of the jail administration.
