CALANGUTE: Stray cattle, garbage and illegal constructions dominated the Calangute gram sabha which was held at the Village Panchayat hall on Sunday.
Premanand Deukar a villager brought to the notice of the gram sabha that all water bodies and main nullahs in the jurisdiction of Calangute need to be de-silted before the monsoon. The acting sarpanch Joseph Sequeira told the gram sabha that last year the work of de-silting could not be done as they did not get the sanction from the BDO.
The villagers raised the question of creating awareness and educating people on garbage in the village. In order to do the same, the NGO’s, school students and Mahila Shakti Abhiyan should be taken into confidence and the village panchayat should allocate funds for the programme.
Sandeep raised the issue of stray cattle menace in the village and it is high time a cattle pound is allocated for the village. He further said that the cattle are left on the road without proper food and they feed on garbage thrown on the road side.
The acting sarpanch told the gram sabha that the proposal on having a cattle pound is still on and the village panchayat is searching for land.
The acting sarpanch said that all illegal construction that has sprouted up during the election period without proper documentation will be demolished.
Clotilda Braganza raised the issue of waste water being used to clean the fish market. She said that the village panchayat should take cognizance of this menace.
Sudesh Shirodkar suggested to the gram sabha that the village panchayat should write to the PWD to construct more water tanks and also identify reservoirs in the village to tackle water scarcity in the
village.
The members were informed that the Calangute Village Panchayat has purchased a three bedroom flat at Upper Parel, Mumbai costing Rs 2 cr for the benefit of villagers traveling for treatment of different ailments. Sequeira informed the members that the flat was purchased from the village panchayat fund.
The budget for the year 2017-2018 showed an income of Rs 8,95,61,000 and expenditure as Rs 9,81,80,000 with an opening balance of Rs 6,60,82,090.
