MARGAO
Citing the claim made by Attorney General (AG) of India that the SC order for ban on liquor sale within 500 mts distance on highways is not applicable to bars and restaurants, liquor traders associations at a meeting held in Margao on Thursday said that the order is unclear and urged the Excise commissioner to keep the implementation of the said order on hold till a clear view emerges. They also demanded the next government to amend the Excise rules to rescue liquor traders.
“We read in newspapers that the Attorney General (AG) of India has opined that the SC order is not applicable to bars and restaurants. Goa AG is also of the same opinion. We appeal to the Excise commissioner to keep the implementation of the order on hold,” said Michael Carasco.
It may be recalled that in Salcete, 640 liquor outlets are identified to be in the 500 metre radius. A report has been submitted to the Excise commissioner for further
action.
