Burglars take away 2 silver chains, cash from Curchorem temple

The Maruti temple at Marutigad, Curchorem was burgled on Friday night.

The police informed that the burglars effected entry into the temple by breaking the lock on the right side door.

Surprisingly, the culprits did not touch the idols or the fund box. But, took away two silver chains worth Rs 2000 and Rs 1500 cash.

A dog squad and fingerprint expert was also pressed into service to get the vital clues.

PSI Veronica Coutinho is investigating the case under the guidance of PSI Shivram Vaigankar.

A member of the temple committee  Pandharinath Lotlokar informed media persons that some 25 years ago robbery had taken place at the temple wherein valuables and traditional lamps were taken away by the burglars. Luckily, the robbers were caught while boarding a Belgaum-bound bus at Curchorem bus stand.

Later, a tower was installed by a mobile company behind the temple and a security guard was also appointed. But, for the last few months there is no security guard and the burglars took advantage of the same, he said.

He further said that two CCTV cameras have been installed at the temple but they are not working.

Some residents said that the burglary is not committed by habitual robbers, and suspected  youth addicted to drugs behind the act. Several youth are addicted to drugs here, they said adding as per some sources drugs are being supplied by gaddas in Curchorem-Kakoda and Sanvordem.
