DRAMAPUR: Dramapur gram sabha on Sunday unanimously passed a resolution opposing mobile towers in residential areas and asked the panchayat to find a suitable location for setting up the towers along the national highway.

The gram sabha witnessed a chaos after it was brought to the notice of the villagers that the panchayat had carried out an inspection of a site proposed for setting up a mobile tower at Zamcotto.

The gram sabha was divided on the opinion of mobile towers as some villagers contended that there was a need to set up towers as the connectivity is poor in many areas, while others strongly objected to it, while some suggested that the panchayat should impose double penalty and regularise the Reliance tower in the village.

The villagers finally agreed to identify a site which is away from residential areas where mobile companies could set up the towers.

The residents also sought to know from the panchayat members about the power sub-station which was proposed by them as they continue to face frequent power cuts.

The sarpanch informed that while the sub-station has got an approval, the project is pending for want of space. However, the villagers shot back saying that panchayat cannot identify land for setting up the sub-station but can find land for mobile towers.

The gram sabha also passed a surplus budget of Rs 97.6 lakh for the financial year 2017-18, while also presenting the audit report of 2015-16.

Further the gram sabha sought from the panchayat members the report card on their performance as they pointed out that the villagers had the right to know what was done by their representatives during the last five years.
