PANAJI: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has decided to nominate two-time Sankhali MLA Pramod Sawant for the post of Speaker of the state legislative assembly.
The legislature secretariat has already issued a notification for the election of Speaker which will be held on March 22.
The process of filing nomination for the post will be held on March 21. Legislature secretary Nilkanth Subhedar said that filing of nomination for the Speaker’s post would be open up to 12 pm on March 21.
Sources said that a meeting of ruling MLAs would be held on March 21 at 10.30 am to nominate Sawant as a candidate for the post of Speaker.
The budget session of the legislative assembly will commence from March 22, and Governor Mridula Sinha will deliver her address on March 23 in the House. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who also holds finance portfolio, will present the budget for 2017-18 on March 24.
The election for the post of Deputy Speaker will be held on the last day of the session.
Since this will be the first session of the newly-elected state assembly, there will be no much business.
