NAVELIM: Navelim residents on Saturday again stopped the ongoing work of the western bypass alleging that the work is being carried out illegally.

They also vowed to intensify their agitation against the ongoing work.

The residents, who were accompanied by Fr Eremito Rebello, informed that the work is being carried out illegally and that the trucks, which are supplying mud for the ongoing work, do not have requisite permissions for it.

Fr Rebello said if there was nothing illegal about the work, the trucks would not have fled from the site which raises a suspicion.

He said the bypass is affecting several households, besides small landholdings. He said in order to facilitate the bypass work, water bodies, marshy land are being filled up with mud and alleged that the project was aimed to benefit the Mopa airport.

Siddarth Karapurkar said that despite raising objection to the ongoing western bypass, the work still continues and the mud is dumped at odd hours.

He alleged that the work is going on without proper licences. He said the government was trying to bulldoze the people’s rights, adding, the people will also rise and oppose the work.
