The additional district and session’s court in Mapusa on Saturday sentenced a Virnoda resident Ganpat Shetye under section 302 of IPC to undergo life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 and in default the accused will have to undergo three more years of rigorous imprisonment.

The accused was married to Sneha Shetye a resident of Moira.

Often quarrels were reported between the couple and as a result Sneha began to stay at her parents’ house in Moira and several attempts made by the accused Ganpat to bring his wife to his house at Pernem turned futile.

On April 26, 2011 the accused purchased a knife from a shop in Mapusa market and then proceeded to her office in Panaji and told the deceased that he would drop her at her parent’s house.

Later in the evening he took her to an isolated place at Nachinola and stabbed her several times on her stomach.

Following the incident he fled to his house at Pernem and informed his family members about the crime. His family subsequently informed the Pernem police and the accused was handed over to Mapusa police who had booked him under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The public prosecutor advocate Sunita Nagvekar requested the court to award maximum punishment as the accused had hatched a conspiracy to murder his wife.
