Anjuna police have made a partial recovery of gold ornaments in melted form from a goldsmith to whom it was sold by a constable Suraj Pendse, arrested for allegedly extorting gold ornaments from a minor boy. The recovered gold ornaments are valued at around rupees a lakh.

It may be recalled that, on April 5, mother of a minor boy had lodged a complaint against Pendse for allegedly extorting gold ornaments worth Rs 2.20 lakh and cash worth Rs 15000 from her son since Janaury.

Police informed that the boy alongwith his girlfriend had visited a spot in Siolim where the constable found them and told them that they were not allowed to sit at an isolated place and a case would be booked against them.

The constable further offered to settle the case and allegedly demanded a lump sum payment, the police said, adding, later the minor boy handed over his gold chain and subsequently gave away gold worth Rs 2.20 lakh and cash worth Rs 15000. The incident came to light after the woman enquired with her son about the missing gold.
During the course of investigation, the police learnt that the extorted gold ornaments were mortgaged with a financial institution dealing with gold loans by the alleged accused.

Police informed that the constable later cleared some part of the loan and took possession of some gold ornaments, valued at around one lakh rupees, and sold it to a goldsmith in the city.

Police informed that these gold ornaments were recovered in melted form. In this case, Anjuna police have registered an offence under Section 389 of Indian Penal Code and Section 8 of Goa Children’s Act and had arrested the accused. PSI Samir Tarale is investigating the case.
