The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) will be temporarily relocating the beef and pork stalls, which are presently housed in the building which has outlived its life and now posing danger not only to the stall owners but also the customers.
In order to erect temporary stalls for the beef and pork traders, a compositing unit standing opposite Mapusa fish and meat market is being dismantled.
The new fish and meat complex was constructed to accommodate all fish, chicken, mutton, beef and pork vendors.
On January 26, 2014, the market complex was inaugurated and initially only fish vendors moved in the premises, which was followed by chicken and mutton vendors.
However, the beef and pork vendors refused to shift into the premises, claiming that it was not possible to run the trade from the first floor as huge load of meat would be needed to be transported everyday and also claimed that the size of stalls was small.
After hearing their grievance, the MMC allowed them to carry on with their business from the old building till an alternative arrangement is put in place for them.
On September 1, the council during the special meeting had resolved to reconstruct the building housing beef and pork stalls, by spending municipal funds.
The new building will house 14 stalls.
During the recent pre-monsoon preparedness meeting, which was convened by Deputy Collector of Bardez, Mapusa, the fire station officials had raised concern over the condition of structure and had said that during monsoon there is possibility of the structure collapsing as it is in a bad condition.
The municipality has almost completed dismantling of the compositing unit, and the open space will be used to construct temporary structure to accommodate the pork and beef vendors so that it can go ahead with the reconstruction of the old building.
When contacted, the chairperson Sandip Falari informed that “we have to make alternative arrangement for the beef and pork stall owners, who are running their business in the old market, and only after that the council would go for the demolition the old building and construct a new building to house the beef and pork traders.”
He said that “the compositing unit at the market is being demolished as bigger compositing unit has been set up at Assagao garbage disposal site. Currently, we have around 7-8 compositing units at various locations in our jurisdiction.”
“The site would be used to erect temporary stalls for beef and pork vendors. The vendors would run their business there until the new building is made ready,” he added.
