At least 270 police personnel have been fined for not wearing helmet this year. However, these police personnel will not get away by mere payment of fines as they will be liable for disciplinary action.
Sources said the Goa traffic police since January this year have penalised over 41,958 riders for not wearing helmet out of which 270 are police personnel.
A senior police officer said the names of those police personnel fined for not wearing helmet have been sent to the Goa police department for initiating necessary action.
“The names of such police personnel will go to the respective unit in-charges, who will decide on the nature of punishment,” said the police officer.
Director General of Police Dr Muktesh Chander had said that if they come across police personnel not wearing helmet then a disciplinary action would be initiated against them. Chander had said that wearing of helmet is must and everyone should follow the rule for their own safety. If police personnel, irrespective whether they are on duty or off duty, strictly follow the helmet rule then it would set an example for the society.
As per data available, in 2015, 311 persons were killed in road accidents of which 169 were two-wheeler riders while in 2016, 336 were killed of which 186 were riders.
This year till date, around 107 persons have died in road accidents which around 56 have been riders.
According to the police, some 15 to 20 per cent of the riders die due to head injury on account of not wearing a helmet.
