PANAJI: A teenager, who tried to make quick money illegally by attempting to steal currency notes from an automated teller machine (ATM) has been arrested by Porvorim police on Friday.
The accused is a 19-year-old, identified as Arjun Yadav, a native of Maharashtra.
According to police, Yadav is a vagabond. Yadav attempted to break open the ATM of a bank at Porvorim, police said adding that unsuccessful Yadav fled leaving behind the partly damaged cover of the ATM.
The incident had occurred on Thursday night after 12 am and was recorded on the CCTV cameras installed inside the ATM booth. Based on the CCTV footage, Porvorim police team, under the supervision of police inspector Paresh Naik, identified and arrested the accused from Porvorim area.
Incidentally, there was a security guard posted at the ATM booth during night time. However, he had left around 12 am, hours before his duty time was to end, police said.
Police said that the accused Yadav used a hacksaw blade and some tools in order to break open the ATM. However, he only managed to partly remove the outer cover of the ATM. Failing to break it open, Yadav finally fled, police said.
The incident was noticed on Friday morning and subsequently police were alerted. Based on the footage, police tracked down the accused.
