Stating that students look up to teachers as first role models, Governor Mridula Sinha, who is also the Chancellor of Goa University, on Monday appealed to teachers to behave civilly when in public and set a good example for students.

Speaking at the felicitation function of superannuating teachers held at V M Salgaocar College of Law, Miramar, Sinha said, “Initially students always look upon their teachers and imbibe moral values from them hence it is the duty of the teachers to behave properly when at public functions or events.”

Giving an example of her husband and former Union Minister Dr Ram Kripal Sinha, the Governor said that her husband who was a teacher by profession was very careful the way he used to present himself in public.

Narrating a case, Sinha said that cinema was the only medium of entertainment during her college days so she always wanted to watch movies in theatre and used to request her husband to take her to a nearby cinema hall but her husband was least interested in movies as he used to spend most of his time reading books.

She said, “After frequent requests, on one particular day he agreed to take me to a cinema hall. On the eve of joining college as a teacher, he was ready to go for a movie, he told me that only that day he could take me for a movie but from the next day he would not be able to see movies as he felt that he will be surrounded by students and wherever he goes, those students will observe him and his behaviour. Hence it was important for him to be more cautious the way he behaves in public and set a good example for his students.”

Vice Chancellor of Goa University Varun Sahni said that the university is all set to implement choice-based credit system (CBCS) at the undergraduate level from the academic year 2017-18. He said, “Chancellor Mridula Sinha has approved the ordinance which will enable us to implement the CBCS from the upcoming academic year. There is no looking back.”  He said that the primary aim of the Goa University is to increase the choices of subjects offered to students at the undergraduate level, retain job securities of the teaching community and to implement CBCS in such a manner that it does not put massive burden on public finances.

On the occasion, seven superannuating teachers of various colleges affiliated to the Goa University were felicitated at the hands of Sinha.

for their outstanding contribution in the field of education during their tenure.
