CURCHOREM
Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral at a press conference has said that a garbage treatment plant is the need of the hour to save Curchorem-Cacora areas from turning into another Sonsoddo.
CCMC chairperson Sushant Naik, vice-chairperson Sujata Naik, director of Garbage Treatment and Disposal Management Rosario Dantas were also present.
Cabral said that the opposition had made two issues against him in the last assembly elections. “One was the garbage treatment plant and other was the coal plant. I am against the coal plant but garbage treatment plant is a necessity for a clean and healthy Curchorem,” he added.
Cabral said that the government has proposed four treatment plants in the state – one each at Saligao, Curchorem, Bainguinim and Verna. The Saligao GTP is functioning for the last 11 months and it is one of the finest GTPs in the country.
Cabral said that he has distributed pamphlets to residents asking them to register their names to pay a visit to the Saligao plant on April 17. He said that people interested to visit the plant should submit their names before April 15. He also called upon GTP opponents to be a part of the visit.
Cabral further said that there will be special vehicles to lift garbage in the town and garbage transfer stations will be opened in panchayat areas from where garbage will be lifted.
Dantas said that the civic body presently collects 30 to 40 tonne of garbage per day and the dumping site has turned into a hillock. He said that if it is not treated, the site will turn into another Sonsoddo.
CCMC chairperson Sushant Naik said that some politically motivated persons are opposing the proposed GTP but do not come up with an alternative. He appealed to the people to support the MLA in setting up the GTP.
