PANAJI: The government is likely to hold elections to 186 village panchayats on June 11, as work on delimitation of wards has been complete.
The High Court of Bombay at Goa on Wednesday directed the state election commission and the government to hold panchayat polls in the state on or before June 12.
Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho told ‘The Navhind Times’ on Thursday that the government would most probably hold the panchayat polls on June 11. However, final decision will be firmed up on Friday.
Panchayat director Sandhya Kamat on Thursday said the directorate of panchayat has completed the delimitation of wards, clearing the decks for the elections.
“Thirty-two new wards have been formed in 16 panchayats. The newly-formed Quelosim panchayat will have seven wards, taking the number of new wards to 39,” she said, adding that as many as 1522 wards across 186 panchayats will go to the polls.
The file on delimitation work will be forwarded to the government on Friday, and after government’s approval a notification will be issued.
“Once the notification is issued, it will be forwarded to the state election commission…,” she said.
The panchayat directorate has identified the wards which have been reserved for women, scheduled tribes and other backward classes. However, reservation of wards for schedule castes are still under consideration of the government.
State election commissioner R K Srivastava has appointed returning officers/assistant returning officers vide an extraordinary gazette for holding panchayat polls.
The said officers have been appointed in all 12 talukas.
For Pernem taluka, the mamlatdar and joint mamlatdar-I of the taluka have been appointed as the returning officers, while circle inspector and upper division clerk as the assistant returning officers. For Bicholim taluka, the mamlatdar and joint mamlatdar-I of the taluka have been appointed as the returning officers, while circle inspector-I and head clerk as the assistant returning officers.
For Sattari taluka, the mamlatdar of the taluka has been appointed as the returning officer, while Aval Karkun as the assistant returning officer.
For Bardez taluka, the mamlatdar and joint mamlatdar-I of the taluka have been appointed as the returning officers, while Aval Karkun and head clerk-I as the assistant returning officers.
For Tiswadi taluka, the mamlatdar and joint mamlatdar-I of the taluka have been appointed as the returning officers, while circle inspector-I and head clerk as the assistant returning officers.
For Ponda taluka, the mamlatdar, joint mamlatdar-I and joint mamlatdar-II of the taluka have been appointed as the returning officers, while circle inspector-I, circle inspector-II and head clerk as the assistant returning officers.
For Dharbandora taluka, the mamlatdar of the taluka has been appointed as the returning officer, while Aval Karkun as the assistant returning officer.
For Sanguem taluka, the mamlatdar of the taluka has been appointed as the returning officer, while Aval Karkun as the assistant returning officer.
For Salcete taluka, the mamlatdar, joint mamlatdar-I and joint mamlatdar-II of the taluka have been appointed as the returning officers, while Aval Karkuns and tax inspector as the assistant returning officers.
For Mormugao taluka, the mamlatdar of the taluka has been appointed as the returning officer, while Aval Karkun as the assistant returning officer.
For Quepem taluka, the mamlatdar of the taluka has been appointed as the returning officer, while Aval Karkun as the assistant returning officer.
For Canacona taluka, the mamlatdar of the taluka has been appointed as the returning officer, while Aval Karkun as the assistant returning officer.
