Mormugao civic body condemns MPT over ‘outsider’ remark

Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Friday condemned the Mormugao Port authorities for making remarks against the people of Goa as outsiders. The council also resolved to support the people of Vasco and state in opposing the expansion plans of the Mormugao Port Trust.

The ordinary meeting of the council which was held in council hall on Friday resolved various issues like absorbing 45 daily wage workers, 32 contract workers in order to take up the pre-monsoon works in all the 25 wards. The MMC has decided to fill the drivers’ posts for rickshaws transporting garbage. The meeting was chaired by MMC chairperson Deepak Naik.

The council also resolved that until and unless the project proponents and MPT authorities give proper replies and explanation to the queries raised by the citizens and activists during the environmental public hearing, it will not give permission for the expansion projects of the
MPT.

MMC chairperson Naik decided to write a second reminder letter to the district collector South over the council’s resolution of banning coal transportation from the city roads. The council has decided to impose tax on the MPT’s buildings which comes under the jurisdiction of MMC.

Majority of the councillors demanded action against the non-performing MMC legal advisors.

There was a demand from all the councillors that MMC should not discriminate while initiating action against the illegal gaddas. The council has resolved to issue notice to a school which is operating in the community hall at Bogda.

The MMC has resolved to give the dilapidated Mormugao municipal garden based at Patrong Baina for a 30 year lease, following a request letter given by the Chowgule and Company Pvt Ltd in April this
year.
