CANACONA: A restaurant, belonging to Milagres Corte of Sheli-Canacona, was gutted in a fire at Madditolop near Loliem on Saturday morning. The loss has been estimated at around Rs 9 lakh.
According to station fire officer, Canacona, M Lolyekar, they received a call informing them about the fire following which they rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control and thwarted it from spreading to the surrounding houses.
Leading fireman Ulhas Gaonkar alongwith firemen Amresh Mokhardkar and Vivek Naik carried out the firefighting operation under the guidance of SFO Lolyekar. They were assisted by driver operator Sarvesh Naik.
Items like soft drink crates, deep freezers and other material were gutted in the fire.
Meanwhile, Corte, proprietor of the above restaurant at Madditolop-Loliem, has complained against Justinian Fernandes of Sheli alleging that the latter entered the kitchen of the restaurant and burnt cash worth Rs 4.90 lakh and other articles in the restaurant, causing him a loss of another Rs 16 lakh.
According to police reports, Fernandes allegedly set fire to the restaurant on Saturday at around 9.40 a.m and fled whereby five mobile handsets, two TV sets, six refrigerators, two generators, three mixers, two grinders and other kitchen utensils were damaged.
The complainant said that the cash was kept in a bag, which was the salary of the employees.
The police have registered a case under Section 436 of IPC. PSI Remedious D’Souza is investigating under PI Filomeno Costa.
