Dabolim airport police on Monday arrested one Rollin Regan (49), a resident of Porvorim, who was wanted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Mumbai, in connection with a bank fraud case that was reported in Maharashtra some 20 years ago.
According to the police, the security agencies at the immigration counter of the Dabolim airport intercepted Regan on his arrival due to his suspicious behaviour while clearing the immigration formalities upon landing.
The police said that Regan was residing in Canada for the last 20 years. He had come down to Goa from Dubai in the wee hours of Monday by Air India flight to meet his wife in Porvorim. He was supposed to visit the Goa Medical College (GMC) and Hospital at Bambolim to obtain a psychiatric patient certificate as he is a psychiatric patient. The certificate would have helped him extend visa in Goa on health grounds.
The immigration authorities at the Dabolim airport were alerted, as there was a look-out notice issued by the CBI Mumbai for Regan’s involvement in a bank fraud that was reported in Maharashtra some 20 years ago.
He was reported to be absconding soon after committing the fraud. The Maharashtra police had conducted an intensive search operation then, but had failed to trace the accused, who figured in the most-wanted list of Maharashtra police.
Soon after the arrest of Regan, the Dabolim airport police intimated the Maharashtra police and a team from the neighbouring state arrived in Goa in the afternoon to seek custody of Regan.
Meanwhile, Regan was admitted to the GMC after he complained of illness to the Dabolim airport police. The Maharashtra police are awaiting a fitness certificate from the GMC. Sources at the GMC said that Regan has been declared as a psychiatric patient and the CBI Mumbai personnel have not been given permission to take him into custody.
Sources said that the CBI team will approach court seeking Regan’s custody for his involvement in the bank fraud case.
