A five year old male leopard accidentally snared and died of suffocation in a trap at Latambarcem in Bicholim taluka. The trap was laid to catch wild boars. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning. Some villagers spotted the trapped leopard near Sateri temple.
According to information received from forest officials and locals, the leopard might have been trapped on Monday and was trying to come
out of the trap. However it must have been starving for food and water.
When the forest team visited the site in the morning the leopard was alive and the forest official called the tranquilising team from Bondla, but before the team could arrive the leopard was dead.
RFO Vilas Gawas along with Soma Parwar, Anil Kerkar, Jeetendra Naik rushed to the spot and conducted further investigations. The forest team conducted the panchanama.
The Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar who holds the Forest Ministry was informed about the incident. Parrikar has assured to provide more facilities to the forest rescue team in order to avoid such incidents in the future. In the last few years around three incidents of leopards dying was reported due to the poachers trap, and the rescue team was late in attending the calls.
