PANAJI

The ongoing construction work of a culvert at Campal, behind Vivanta by Taj, has become a cause of concern for people staying in and around the locality who have expressed concern that if the work is not completed before the monsoon the city could witness flooding in various areas.

The residents further alleged that as a result of the work the flow of water has been blocked on both the sides and the water level has risen near Lake View, Camara Bhat and near Thomas garage and that if the water is not pumped out then there is every possibility of flood occurrence during the monsoon.

The work has been going on for nearly two months and the contractor had assured to complete it before the monsoon, but the work is still in the early stages, the residents stated.

With water flow getting blocked, plastic waste and other garbage is seen collected near the starred hotel lane and the water level has risen behind the 2 Signal Training Centre canteen and the shopping centre opposite the Military Hospital.

Mayor of the Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP), Surendra Furtado, felt that the contractors should use pumps for pumping out the water from one side before the monsoon sets in.

While the water level of St Inez nullah has completely gone down near the sewerage treatment plant.

The CCP had undertaken de-weeding work in the nullah. The cleaning and de-weeding work was undertaken by the CCP at a cost of Rs 11 lakh through corporate social responsibility.

A councillor Pramay Mainkar informed that there are nearly 90 toilets connected all along the length and breadth of the nullah, adding, without demolishing the structures along nothing will evolve from it and that occupants of the structures should be rehabilitated.
