With the summer vacation coming to an end, the schools in the state are all set to reopen on May 5 for the new academic year 2017-18.

Stating that all the preparations for the reopening of the schools, including announcement of the terms, vacations as well as breaks, and public holidays, have been completed, director of education G P Bhat told ‘The Navhind Times’ that classes from I to X and class XII would reopen on May 5. However, commencement of class XI has been postponed due to their still-continuing admission process.

The director of education also said that many of the school teachers have been deployed for duties pertaining to the forthcoming village panchayat election, and therefore, will have to proceed for related training after teaching in the school for some time. “Therefore some classes, in few of the schools, will face inconvenience and will have to be dismissed before their regular scheduled duration,” he added.

Speaking further, Bhat said that the textbooks of all classes have been already dispatched to the schools. “The distribution of raincoats and uniforms has, however, been delayed due to some difficulty faced by the Goa Khadi & Village Industries Board, which has been entrusted with the task of supplying the same,” he added, pointing out that the raincoats and uniforms will be disbursed to the students in a week or two.

The first term of schools will be from June 5 to October 14, 2017, while the second term will be from November 6, 2017 to April 30, 2018. The Ganesh Chaturthi break will be from August 23 to August 29, the Diwali vacation will be from October 16 to November 4, and the Christmas break will be from December 23 to January 1, 2018.

The total number of working days including examination days for primary, secondary and higher secondary schools shall not be less than 234 days, and total number of instructional days shall not be less than 200 days, during the academic year 2017-18, as per a circular release by the department of education.

Meanwhile, the students and parents were seen shopping Sunday evening, for new shoes, umbrellas, raincoats, school bags, stationery and so on in various markets around the state.
