PANAJI: Around 161 history-sheeters and 2091 persons with bad character have been identified by the Goa police whose movements are likely to be monitored closely by the police in view of the Merces violence, where tourists from Maharashtra were attacked by ruffians on Wednesday.
Sources said that in North Goa there are 67 history-sheeters and 94 in South Goa. On the other hand, there are 1296 persons with bad character in North Goa and 795 in South Goa.
Deputy inspector-general of police Rupinder Kumar said that police station in-charges will be held liable for failure on their part to keep a check on the ruffians getting into crime.
“There has to be a mechanism to keep a check on such people (ruffians). if such people are not kept in check then action will be initiated against the concerned head of the police station,” Kumar said.
Stating that ruffians going around beating people will not be tolerated, he said, “We will make sure such incidents do not reoccur.” People prone to create nuisance are being identified. Surveillance on history-sheeters, persons with bad character will be taken up vigorously, he said.
Meanwhile, the three accused arrested by the Old Goa police in connection with the Merces violence have been remanded to six-day police custody.
The three accused – Vishal Golatkar, Lawrence Dias, Suraj Shetye – were arrested while the fourth accused Sai Kundaikar has been on the run.
Kundaikar has approached court seeking anticipatory bail. The police said that Golatkar, Dias and Shetye were previously involved in criminal offences.
Dias was convicted in a rape case and is on bail, the police said, adding Golatkar and Shetye were arrested in a robbery case by the Porvorim police, and they are out on bail. “We have initiated the process to cancel their bail,” North Goa SP Karthik Kashyap said.
