MARGAO
The Margao Municipal Council (MMC), during its meeting on Friday, decided to outsource the door-to-door waste collection.
And, so the council resolved to call for expression of interest from the private parties for it.
During the meeting, it was decided to provide numbers to the illegal houses in the municipal area, with the sole purpose of recovering house tax arrears.
The decision was taken following a discussion on the issue of illegal houses in the municipal jurisdiction, and the loss of revenue due to non-payment of house tax by the occupants.
“We are interested in providing house numbers to the illegal houses within the MMC jurisdiction. This will be done only to collect the pending house tax. The given house numbers would not be benefiting the occupants in legal purpose,” said the chairperson Babita Prabhudesai.
The council collectively resolved to place an advertisement appealing to all the illegal house occupants to apply for house numbers, and that the council would provide them the numbers.
The decision has a significance, as the civic body does not have record about the illegal structures existing in its jurisdiction.
The council also resolved to implement single window system for issuing permission for the construction of compound walls and single unit dwellings from July 1.
“The chief officer Y B Tavde has assured to complete the procedure within 10 days, and the civic body would be providing the construction licences within two working days, taking the local councillors into confidence. The simplification of the procedure will also be done,” said the chairperson after the meeting, which lasted for almost 3 hours.
The council also agreed to introduce the pay parking system.
“We have agreed to have pay parking system in Margao, accepting the traffic cell’s proposal,”the chairperson said.
The traffic cell has identified the areas and the lanes where the pay parking system will be implemented, she added.
After the two-time councillor Avinash Shirodkar pointed out that the council is not serious in securing its properties, it was resolved to search documents of the municipal properties.
The chairperson ordered the administrative section to find out the documents.
“We presently do not have the documents of MCC property, claimed to be the MMC property. I request the administrative officer to search the documents before we take some steps in that direction,” Prabhudesai added.
The council also resolved to utilise grants of Rs 1.1 crore in procuring an earthmoving machinery and trucks as the money has to be strictly spent on solid waste management system.
Interestingly, the council owned the responsibility for the delay in carrying out the pre-monsoon works in some wards.
The meeting, as usual, was noisy with some of the councillors conveniently ignoring the decorum. The chairperson had to frequently call for theirattention.
