The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) will set up sewage treatment plant for disposal of untreated waste water from the Mapusa fish market and meat complex by spending municipal funds. The plant will be electro oxy coagulation-based and will treat around 10 cubic metre waste water per day.

It may be recalled that on September 1 last year, the Mapusa municipality, in its council meeting, had resolved to construct mini sewerage treatment plant for Mapusa fish market and meat complex which currently is discharging waste water into public drains. Now even beef and pork stalls are also included in the list.

During one of the grievances meetings which was held by Deputy Collector of Bardez Chandrakant Shetkar, it was revealed by the health officer of the Mapusa urban health centre Dr Anant Palekar that it has not issued any no-objection certificate despite that the municipality has issued licence to these stall owners to undertake the said business. The NOC was not issued as there was no proper provision for septic tanks as a result all the stall owners are discharging their untreated waste water into drains.

In order to resolve the issue, the council has taken a resolution and on Wednesday, a tender was floated inviting the interested parties to take up the work of treatment plant which will handle 1 cubic metre of waste water per hour.

Sources claimed that initially the MMC had approached GSUDA to take up work of STP plant but now it has decided to undertake work through municipal funds. The cost of plant is estimated at around Rs 6 lakh.

When contacted, MMC chairperson Rohan Kavlekar informed, “We had taken a resolution and as a follow up, we have floated tender to set up treatment plant for waste water which is released by chicken and meat stalls and fish vendors. We will connect the beef and pork stalls to the plant so that only treated water goes into the drains.”
