PANAJI: Monsoon is expected to be delayed by two to three days in the state, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday. According to IMD, the statistical model forecast suggests that the monsoon onset over Goa is likely to be slightly delayed due to weak southwesterly wind that brings the southwest monsoon in the state.
Torrential rain and thundershowers continued to hit Goa and in the last 24 hours, 46.8 mm of rainfall was recorded. “The ongoing monsoon rain can be attributed to the upper air cyclonic circulation in Arabian Sea off the Karnataka and Goa coasts. The system has kept the monsoon current active over the region, giving good rain but southwesterly wind has not been strengthened yet to declare onset of monsoon in Goa. It may take two to three days to hit the region,” director of IMD V K Mini said.
In the last 24 hours, heavy rainfall of 7 cm was recorded at Mormugao followed by Panaji and Dabolim where 5 cm of rainfall was recorded. Rainfall of 4 cm each was recorded at Canacona and Sanguem, while in other regions the rainfall recorded was between 3 cm and 1 cm. The IMD has forecast moderate rain to occur at most places in Goa and heavy rain at isolated places for the next five days.
