Mapusa Municipal Council, on Friday, resolved to set up an ERT waste treatment plant at Cunchelim where a land had been identified where a Gurgaon company will set up the ERT technology plant to handle garbage generated in Mapusa.

On Friday, an ordinary meeting of the council was held wherein chairperson Rohan Kavlekar informed that “during the previous meeting the council had accepted a proposal of Gurgaon company to set up an ERT waste treatment plant at Assagao and it was asked to present a MOU before the council, but due to objection from comunidade of Assagao we had to drop the proposal.”

“Hence, we are proposing to take up the same project at Cunchelim site which has been already acquired by the council as a garbage site,” he added.

However, raising objection, local councillor Chandrashekhar Benkar questioned the proposal and said that “the project can be taken up at Assagao but in Cunchelim I oppose as the people are against it.”

Councillor Madhumita Narvekar also said that she is objecting to the project claiming that proper procedure has not been followed.

However, councillor Falari pointed out that “this land has been acquired under the supervision of High Court.”

The council also resolved to provide an area of 150-200 square metre to Goa Waste Management Corporation to handle garbage which enters the town. Further, the council, in principle, approved reconstruction of beef and pork-selling market and suggested reduction in the width size. The proposal will be sent to the NGPDA.

The council has also resolved to undertake upgradation of sanitation facilities and painting work at Mapusa fish and meat market using Rs 5 lakh funds from fisheries department. Councillor Tushar Tople’s proposal for reviewing trade licences was accepted at the
meeting.

Over the issue of speed breakers and signages, councillors cornered the chairperson and said that only resolutions are passed but they are not implemented. The council also resolved to go for an automated storage system for maintaining
records.
