Avertano calls for people’s participation in development

MARGAO: Minister for fisheries Avertano Furtado, on Saturday, called upon the people to participate in  development process, and asked them to join hands with the government to take administration to doorstep.  

Earlier in the day, the Fisheries Minister along with former chief minister Digambar Kamat, and South Goa Collector  took lead in paying tributes to the freedom fighters, and in particular  to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia on the Revolution Day.

In his address, Furtado said that the work on the jetties at Betul, Cortalim, Malim and Chapora will be undertaken within this month, which will not only benefit the trawler owners but also traditional fishermen.

He further said that the cage fish culture by the department has yielded good results, and 10 tonne of fish was provided to the people at affordable rates.

He said that the government is encouraging people to take up cage fish farming, mussel farming, crab farming in addition to ornamental fish farming.

Furtado  said that additional land has been provided for the expansion of Kadamba bus stand in Margao, which will ease the congestion there.

He said that the government has also enhanced  minimum wages to Rs 307 as against Rs 215  from May 20 this year with variable dearness allowance based on consumer price index.

He said that the government is very much  concerned about the unemployment, and added that in a bid to counter the same, the state employment exchange will be sharing data with the Union government’s new job website.

“The data sharing will be done in a phased manner, with data from North Goa being compiled first followed by South Goa,” he said.

The Minister said that June 18 has a great significance in the history of Goa’s freedom struggle as it was on this day that Dr Ram Manohar Lohia, a great nationalist, gave  clarion call to the people of Goa to fight against the Portuguese colonial rule.
