VASCO: The incessant rains that lashed Vasco, on Monday, led to water-logging of road stretches and low-lying areas in various areas.
Sources informed that rainwater entered Mata Secondary School building located near the MPT ground, Baina. The students, teachers and staff of the school had to face immense hardship with the rainwater entering the premises, the sources added.
Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida and Mormugao municipal council chairperson Deepak Naik, upon receiving the information, immediately rushed to the site along with Mormugao mamlatdar Laxmikant Dessai.
Speaking to media, Almeida said that the South Western Railway authorities are responsible for the rainwater entering Mata Secondary School building.
“The South Western Railway has laid a new railway track, and also has built a shed which has led to water-logging in and around Mata Secondary School and MPT ground,” he said.
Soon, he directed the mamlatdar to arrange for an earthmoving machinery at the site to open up the blocked vent of a drain.
Dessai, thereafter, arranged an earthmoving machinery and opened the vent.
In another incident, the Vasco railway quarters witnessed water-logging during the wee hours.
The occupants of the quarters – ‘D’ class workers, working in warehouse section, had a sleepless night with the rainwater entering their rooms.
Meanwhile, Vasco fire personnel attended two emergency calls pertaining to tree fall.
A coconut tree had come down on a house belonging to Prabhawati Revondekar, located behind Hotel Rebello at Mundvel-Vasco.
The tree damaged the rear portion of the house, due to which the house owner incurred a loss of Rs 1,000.
The incident was reported at around 12 p.m.
In a second incident, the fire personnel cleared a huge tree that had collapsed on high tension overhead electric lines near the old immigration office at Mormugao Harbour at around 9.30 a.m.
The fire personnel on late Sunday night rescued a man who was trapped in an elevator.
Vasco fire station in-charge Dilip Bicholkar, informed that they received a call at around 11 pm, informing about a person being trapped in the elevator of a building on second floor.
The fire personnel immediately rushed to the site and found that the elevator had some technical problem, due to which the person was trapped inside.
CURCHOREM: The staff of Curchorem fire station had a tough time on Monday as they had to remove several trees that had fallen due to the gusty wind and torrential rains in various parts of Sanguem and Quepem.
The firefighters cut a huge tree that had fallen on the main road at Kusmai-Sulkarna, and cleared the road for traffic.
A firefighting team had to rush to Gaonkarwada-Cavrem where the house of Ramesh Janu Gaonkar was damaged due to a tree fall.
The loss was estimated at Rs 25,000.
In another incident, a tree fell on the Curchorem-Sanguem road near Kakoda industrial Estate. The firefighters cleared the road of the tree immediately.
A team of firefighters had also to leave for Amona-Sanquelim in connection with a drowning case.
Firefighters Tulshidas Dessai, R V Gaonkar, Shashikant Naik, Gurunath Dessai, Nilesh Naik, Prashant Velip, Shashikant Velip, Sajan Madgudkar, Vasudev Komarpant, Arun Batmukle, Navjit Muli, Vishal Velip and Sawandas Naik carried out the operations under the supervision of duty officer R V Pednekar.
MARGAO: Several trees were uprooted, and houses were damaged, besides the roads were washed away due to the incessant rains in Salcete on Monday.
District Collector Swapnil Naik has asked the mamlatdars and joint mamlatdars, BDOs to be alert to act incase of any eventuality due to the continuance of the rains.
House of Filomen Coutinho of Balli-Cuncolim was damaged as a mango tree came crashing down on it. The loss was estimated to be around Rs 2 lakh.
A tree each fell on houses at Navelim and Mungul. Trees got uprooted at Carmona, Varca, Betalbatim, Darmapur, Mungul and Navelim. The fire and emergency services personnel had a tough time removing the trees.
The town roads, that were dug up by the JICA to lay the underground sewerage pipeline were washed away.
Taking the ‘cover’ of the heavy rains, some building owners released sewage into the drains.
Stinking waste from some hotels was seen flowed down on the road near pick up stand and new market.
