MARGAO: In order to deliver justice during the lifetime of the litigants, there is an absolute need of the independent High Court (HC) for the state of Goa, said a senior most advocate and former president of the Bar Council Anacleto Viegas.
Speaking to the media, Viegas said, “This is our long pending demand. Article 214 of the Constitution of India mandates setting up of High Court for every state. The nascent state of Telangana has shown the way, and its time to follow them.”
He said that “every year, the state produces more than 150 advocates, whose future is bleak on account of the yoke of the High Court of Bombay tied to our independent state.”
He underlined that every admitted appeal, revision or writ takes more than 10 years to come up before the Bombay High Court bench.
“The crocodile tears for expeditious justice and frivolous noise of running night courts would not be necessary for Goa if Goa is given the independent High Court,” he added.
He said that the talented and qualified youth of Goa who pass out from the law colleges hardly get a chance to display their talent with the present arrangement.
“The bench consisting of three judges has indeed lost its reasons for existence as Goa waits for its own High Court,” he added.
“The mandate of Article 214 of the Constitution needs to be enforced to provide for an independent High Court with a setup of at least 7 judges so that justice is delivered during the lifetime of the litigants,” he concluded.
