Mapusa civic body’s new premises begins to leak

MAPUSA: Just ten months ago, the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) was shifted to the much-celebrated heritage building in the town that was renovated by spending around Rs 1.80 crore; however, the structure is now showing signs of shoddy work with the entrance of the building developing leakages.

To avoid inconvenience to the citizens visiting the office and also those using the building, a plastic sheet is made use of to cover the area of the slab where it has become porous, causing rain water to pass through. Due to lack of gradient, rain water accumulates on the plastic sheet, making it a perfect spot for mosquito-breeding.

Now, the worry is that the rain water that accumulates on the plastic sheet may give rise to vector-borne diseases due to mosquito-breeding.  With heavy showers in the last few days, a huge puddle is formed on the terrace, which has been overlooked by the civic authorities.

Before the onset of monsoon, the municipality was seen carrying out awareness against mosquito-breeding and vector-borne diseases in full steam, but it seems to be lacking the same enthusiasm in tackling the problem in their own premises.

When contacted, chairperson Sandip Falari said that “we are waiting for rains to subside so that repair work can be undertaken. We have realised that faulty work at the time of renovation has caused the problem.”

He added that “the plastic sheet has been used as a temporary measure and it will be removed soon.”
