Goa emerging as education hub, says Sawaikar

Stating that the state lacks infrastructure facilities vis-à-vis the education sector although it is second only to Kerala with regards to literacy rate, South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar has said that 45 to 60 per cent of Rs 11 crore he received under MPLADS has been spent on improving infrastructure of schools and other educational institutes in South Goa district in the last two years.

Sawaikar was speaking at the computer distribution function under e-learning equipments of MPLADS, organised by Mormugao Port Trust Education Society, staff, students and PTA of Deepvihar higher secondary school at MPT’s guest house at Headland-Sada. The function was attended by MPT chairman I Jeyakumar, deputy chairman G P Rai, principal Mrunal Korgaonkar, PTA chairman Shivdas Naik, manager Motilal Pednekar, general secretary MPTES S K S Hegde besides others. The E-learning equipments would benefit about 400 students.

Sawaikar informed that he had released a report card of two years of his works as South Goa MP. He further said that Goa is turning into an educational hub due to existence of Goa engineering college and with the proposed National Institutes of Technology (NIT) centre at Cuncolim and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) centre at Farmagudi, its status as an education destination will bolster.

Sawaikar said, “Goa is always looked at as a tourism destination, but now it is emerging as education hub due to the proposed NIT and IIT centres besides the existence of Goa Engineering College which is an oldest institute of engineering.”

He stressed on the need for encouraging young students by exploring their talents adding, “Goa’s image as an educational hub has improved during the last couple of years. E-learning should be made possible by making best use of the facilities as the entire world will be on one finger tips. MPT will see golden days and a new era under the leadership of Union Minister of Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari.”

MPT chairman Jeyakumar stressed on constituting monitoring committee in order to improve the ground level staff of three schools run by the MPT. He praised the principal, managing committee and staff members of the schools run by MPT for their commendable services and performance.

General secretary of MPTES Hegde also spoke on the occasion. The function was compered by Sunil Shet while the manager of Deepvihar higher secondary school Pednekar proposed the vote of thanks.
