The second edition of the Rotary Rain Run ended in a tragic incident on Sunday morning when a Dutch woman collapsed after completing the 10-kilometre marathon, said police sub-inspector Ashish Parab.
The 23-year-old Dutch woman Christina Kamtev collapsed and became unconscious after completing the marathon at the athletic stadium at Bambolim.
The Rotary Rain Run was organised by the Rotary Club of Porvorim in support of women’s health and education. It had begun at 5.30 am.
Police officials at the Agacaim police station said that Christina had been to Goa on a tourist visa and was residing in Anjuna.
According to sources, the doctors present at the stadium rushed towards her after she collapsed and tried all means to revive her but could not succeed in their mission. As they encountered some complications, they rushed her to the nearby Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC). However, the doctors at the casualty there pronounced her brought dead and informed the Agassaim police station.
According to the police, Christina fainted midway during the marathon and was immediately rushed to the GMC by organisers of the marathon.
Christina’s body has been preserved in the GMC morgue for postmortem examination, which would be conducted after receiving a reply from the concerned embassy. Christina’s family members have been informed and the police are waiting for a nod from the embassy for conducting the postmortem examination.
