Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, on Friday, informed the House that the government will commence remedial classes for the high school students to help them cope with academics.
The ITIs will be granted permission to have additional batches as well as additional shifts if required, Parsekar added.
Responding over the private member’s resolution tabled by the Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte, the Chief Minister said that the state government with help from the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) would conduct remedial classes for the Std IX and Std X students.
“We will take the help of the retired teachers and conduct the remedial classes for the students. We will also ask the teachers to take extra classes and help the students with their studies,” he added.
Referring to the no detention policy under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act of 2009, Parsekar said, “As a teacher, I feel that the RTE of 2009 is disastrous to education.”
He informed that the MHRD has sanctioned Rs 500 per student for 695 students.
He said that in the year 2015, 27,665 students appeared for the Class IX examinations and 4,130 failed, indicating about 15 per cent failing percentage.
Earlier, Khaunte tabled the resolution recommending the government to provide special learning classes to failures in Std IX and Std X.
“As per the present RTE Act, 2009, there is no detention up to Std VIII, but moment the child reaches Std IX there are huge failures and the same is observed in Std X. Hence, the government needs to provide special learning classes to such students ensuring that these students get good education for a better future,” the resolution which was withdrawn on the assurance by the Chief Minister stated.
Stating that the state has institutes of international repute such as IIT (Indian Institute of Technology), Parsekar said that he has asked the Minister for Craftsmen Training to grant permissions to ITIs which have sought to increase the number of batches.
“I have told him (Minister for Craftsmen Training) that all those seeking admissions to the ITI should be given admission. If required then start additional batches or even start additional shift,” he added.
