MAPUSA: Tension prevailed in Mapusa, on Thursday, after depositors of a multistate cooperative and multipurpose society gathered at the society branch here after they failed to get their money on maturity of fixed deposits.
A meeting of all agents of the cooperative society was called at the branch office on Thursday wherein a group of employees of Panaji branch along with depositors gathered to meet the general manger of the society who travelled down from Pune to inquire about the issue.
After the agents meeting, the employees of the Panaji branch tried to take up the matter with general manager but agents became furious. The Mapusa police was called in to control the situation.
Both sides put forth their grievances before the police officials later.
Deputy superintendant of police Mahesh Gaonkar, while interacting with media, said that “the matter is already being investigated by the economic offences cell of police, Panaji and the society’s general manager has been asked to submit all documents on Friday.”
He further said that “if any depositor files a complaint with us then we shall register the offence as per law and take necessary action.”
Addressing the media, Salil Gauns, manager of Panaji branch, which has been closed recently, alleged that “there are fixed deposits of many customers which have matured and are amounting to around ` 10 crore but no payment has been made to the customers.”
He further alleged that “we have filed a written complaint with economic offences cell but despite that the society continues to accept fixed deposits of people through cash vouchers.”
An agent, who was employed with the society, Mohammad Jaffer claimed that “since February 2013 he had been working with the society and around 50 customers had deposited money through him and now their deposits have matured and it amounts to around ` 4 crore which the society is not ready to pay claiming financial problem.”
