In a tragic incident, which occurred in Mapusa on Sunday afternoon, two minor boys drowned in spring water well at Khorlim.
According to the Mapusa police, the incident occurred around 12.30 pm when a group of boys visited the Khorlim spring well for a swimming session.
Police revealed the names of the deceased as Krishna Nishad, aged 9 and studying in Class 4 in Government Primary School, and Saurabh Kumar Gupta, 11, a Class 6 student. Both the boys were residents of Ganga Nagar area in Khorlim.
Police said as the boys were swimming in the well, Krishna and Saurabh suddenly started struggling. One of the boys in the group rushed to the locals residing in the vicinity shouting for help.
Soon locals gathered at the spring and three of them jumped into the well to rescue the drowning boys. However, it was too late as they could only manage to fish out the dead bodies of both the boys.
Police rushed to the site on being informed about the incident and conducted panchanama. Later, the bodies were shifted to the District Hospital and sent for autopsy.
A few years back, a similar incident of drowning was reported at the same spring well. Last year, the Mapusa municipal council had undertaken renovation work at the spring and deepened the well. Despite this, no safety measures were put in place at the spring well. Locals claimed that their warning not to venture into the deep well is ignored by youngsters, who visit the spring to swim.
