PANAJI/VASCO: Goa Assembly’s Deputy Speaker and St Andre MLA Vishnu Surya Wagh on Thursday late evening was flown to Mumbai in an air ambulance after no signs of improvement following a massive cardiac arrest on Independence Day evening.

Stating that there has not been any improvement in the condition of Wagh since the day of his admission in the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said that he has consulted the best doctors to bring improvement in the condition of Wagh.

Parsekar said, “We want improvement in Wagh and for which I would do whatever best I can. I am in close contact with the doctors, specialists and dean of GMC to provide better means of medical treatment, outside the state.”

The GMC was abuzz with people from different walks of life visiting the hospital to enquire about the health of the legislator. Visitors included MLAs Babush Monserrate, Lavoo Mamledar, former St Andre MLA Francis Silveira and RSS state chief Subhash Velingkar, amongst others.

GMC dean Pradeep Naik informed that since Wagh’s health condition was critical, he was shifted with a ventilator-equipped ambulance to a hospital in Mumbai and a team of experts accompanied him. He further said that since GMC does not possess a ventilator-equipped ambulance, he was shifted in Manipal Hospitals’ ambulance to the airport. However, Naik did not provide any details about the medical condition of Wagh. He said that the decision to shift Wagh to Mumbai was taken on his family’s request. Wagh was escorted to the airport amidst high security arrangement and the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza seeing him off at the Goa International Airport.

Earlier, security was tightened at the GMC and the area cordoned off in view of the special arrangement made for the smooth movement of the vehicles taking Wagh to the airport.

Sources said that Wagh was shifted to Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai by the special air ambulance aircraft, which had arrived at the Dabolim airport on Thursday around 8 pm from Delhi. Wagh was flown to Mumbai around 9 pm.

However, Wagh’s wife Aruna was flown to Mumbai in a separate airline aircraft, earlier in the evening. She was reportedly upset as she was made to travel separately due to the last minute change in plans.
